Denver Kitchen Remodeling: Different Lighting Options

August 30, 2017

The lighting that you choose for your Denver kitchen remodeling project can affect the overall mood and atmosphere in the room, so this decision should not be taken lightly. Before choosing the lighting, make sure you’ve seen all of these different options:

Chandeliers are usually reserved for grand foyers and dining rooms, but they can also be used in the kitchen. Adding a chandelier to the kitchen will instantly make the room feel more upscale and elegant. Hang it directly in the center of the kitchen or place it right in the middle of your kitchen island. However, make sure the chandelier fits in with the rest of your kitchen’s style. For instance, if you have a rustic or country kitchen, a chandelier would not make sense.

Pendant Lighting

Many homeowners are choosing to hang multiple pendant lights above the kitchen island. This is a great way to draw attention to the island and make it the focal point of the kitchen. Be sure to measure the island carefully to determine how many pendant lights you should hang. Hanging too many will make the area look crowded, while hanging too few will make it look sparse and unfinished.

There are many different pendant lights to choose from, so narrowing down your options to find one that complements your kitchen may be tough. When in doubt, choose a pendant light that matches the appliances. For instance, pair brushed steel appliances with brushed steel pendant lighting fixtures to tie the whole room together.

Under Cabinet Lighting

Under the cabinet lighting will not provide enough light to illuminate the entire kitchen, but it will add a special touch that makes your kitchen stand out. This lighting is ideal for people who spend a lot of time cooking in their kitchens and may need a bit more light to see something they’re working on. Even if you don’t cook, you can always turn off the overhead lights at night and leave just the under cabinet lighting on to give your kitchen a soft glow that makes it easy to find the refrigerator in the middle of the night.

Recessed Lighting

Do you have low ceilings? If so, avoid hanging pendant lighting or chandeliers, which will only make the ceilings appear lower. Instead, choose recessed lighting that disappears into the ceiling. You will need to talk to your contractor to see if recessed lighting will work in your home. The contractor will need to look at your plumbing, electrical wiring, and the positioning of your ceiling joists to determine if this type of lighting can be installed.
